Article(16) CAT-a-Log: Be a Self-Mentor!
Who knows you more than yourself? None!
Can you have a whole time mentor assigned to you? Never! No institute will offer you that luxury. Their mentors in Coaching Institutes have approximately 200 students each to mentor!
The best way to have a whole time mentor is to appoint yourself as a mentor! Just be a self mentor for 24x7! You will never find a better or more committed Mentor!
Coaching Institute's faculty don't have have time, willingness and even capability to be a mentor to such a large number of students. Their Mentorship Programmes are just an eyewash. In any case, such programmes can be beneficial to maximum 10% of the enrolled students, if successful.
There has to be a separate Mentoring Plan for each student. And that mentoring Plan can be made by you and you only. Others may not be much interested in you!
------------------
The most beautiful thing in the world is to simply be your authentic, weird, goofy, hilarious, forever evolving self. Don't ever be a clone by following a set of instructions given to 200 students by a Mentor. Have your own identity and be a self-mentor. The world adores self-made persons!
Self-mentorship means taking the course of life in your hands rather than depending on others. Celebrate every little sparkle of momentum you create with this self-mentorship.
Google, YouTube, ChatGPT etc can be regarded as additional mentors for CAT preparation. Consider your Parents, Siblings, School College Teachers or even this blogger as ocassional mentor. You need just a bit of external mentoring and a lot of Self - Mentoring.
As I have mentioned earlier, undercoaching is bad, but overcoaching is worse. Same is applicable for mentoring. Be careful of excessive mentoring by others.
I never had any mentor throughout my life. Returned to Indore in 2007 after working for 23 years in HPCL. Changed the profession completely and decided to be a Maths teacher. I had only two credentials: Basic Maths knowledge upto class 12 and second the faith in self. When a comaratively old man can start teaching Maths for CAT at the ripe age of 45 years without having any CAT experience; you can certainly start studying Maths at the young age of 17 to 25.
Would like to add here that if you manage to study on your own; you will get immense confidence in your life. In any case, ultimate aim of Coaching has to be to get rid of Coaching. On the 'D' Day, no coach will be there to help you. If you manage to become a Self-Mentor; your 'mentor' will be with you in the exam hall too!
You have already examined your strengths and weaknesses. You have taken time for introspection and soul searching in line with the article on Finding Yourself. And now you are all set to be a Self-mentor!
Once you decide to be a Self-mentor; Directors and Faculty of Coaching Institutes would appear irrelevant and outdated to you!
