(9) CAT-a-LOG: All about CAT, IIMs and Coaching.
Article(9) CAT-a-LOG: Mental Health(i) The Hype created by the Coaching Institutes.
The foremost reason behind the mental health issue is the razzmatazz or hype Created by the Coaching Institutes. As was highlighted in the article no.6 - Why not to join Coaching Institutes- the biggest reason behind the deteriorating mental health of the students is the unsatiated greed of Coaching Institution owners who are generally IIM graduates.
These owners, IIM graduates , certainly know how difficult it is to go into IIMs. They themselves have undergone through the process and do know very well that majority of the students enrolled by them are not fit to be trained for CAT; that too in a short period of 3/6/9/12/15/18 months.
Ethically speaking, maximum 2 or 3 out of 10 students should be taken for CAT after screening by the Coaching Institutes considering the high expectations of IIMs and other Top B Schools. But the greed allows the coaching Institutes to admit ten out of ten students for CAT training!
They just go on enrolling academically weak , destitute students who are likely to fail even in relatively easier exams like CUET and CMAT. Such students start dreaming big and fail in such a competitive exam known as CAT.
Many students are not able to accept their perceived 'failure' and go into depression.
Such is the unjustified hype that for many CAT aspirants, without having even average academic background, it is like IIM Ahmedabad or nothing! They may be extremely good in some other field but become CAT aspirants after witnessing the hype created by the Coaching Institutes for CAT.
Some of them become 'Serial CAT-takers' without taking up a job for several years. Unfortunately IIMs allow students to appear as many times as they want to appear in CAT.
There is a huge flaw in this logic of allowing students to become serial CAT takers. While knowledge can be increased manytimes over a period of time, aptitude can not be improved substantially by appearing in CAT repeatedly. Over several years.
If 10% of the total students from a Coaching Institute are selected for Top B Schools including IIMs then at least 20% students of the remaining 90% students who are not selected develop mental health issues all because of false hopes raised by the Coaching Institutes.
Unfortunately such students don't realise that it is not a failure ; just a matter of suitability for a particular exam which is not bigger than life.
Have interacted with hundreds of unsuccessful and depressed students in the last 16 years. Some got carried away by the dreams sold by the Coaching Institutes. Some are pressurised by the parents and peers. Some just fail to realise that there is a huge gap between their maximum potential and the minimum expectation of IIMs from them.
No coaching Institute personnel ever will point out this gap to the hapless students.
The earlier you know these facts better for your preparation.
