Recent cases of suicide of IIT-JEE aspirants in Kota were widely discussed and a lot of concern was shown by the Society and Governments. Several positive actions were also suggested. However at ground level, the basic problem remains to be solved.
Obviously there is a huge issue of mental health in the students going to Coaching Institutes for CAT also, where they are not treated with dignity and are considered just another customer.
First let us understand what is Mental health. According to WHO, it is a state of mental well-being that enables people to cope with the stresses of life, realize their abilities, learn well and work well, and contribute to their community.
As you all prepare for the CAT, please ensure to maintain utmost physical and mental health. As you take care of your physical health, you have to learn to take care of mental health too.
No study has ever been made to find out the mental health of students going to CAT coaching classes. But I can tell you with my experience of interaction with successful and unsuccessful students for the last 16 years that the number of students having this problem of mental health is very-very high.
Dear students, I request you to kindly go through these articles on Mental Health at least once; even if you think that there is nothing wrong with you.
CAT aspirants who don't succeed are not likely to be treated with dignity by the Coaching Institutes, Media, Social Media, peers and even by the parents in certain cases. This affects some students adversely and also causes depression.
The issue of mental health of CAT aspirants is very important but not discussed by anyone. People discuss only about the brighter side of CAT-IIM, leaving the darker side untouched. It has to be discussed in detail to curtail negative aspects of CAT coaching.
Please let your parents, peers, friends and Social Media friends also go through these articles. Not many of them will read it. Still try!
Whenever you feel low, please take help of your parents, siblings, teachers, friends or professional Counsellors. Please remember, If there is sincere counselling by the right people the issue of mental health can be dealt with more effectively.
You may also call me over phone for friendly talks, if you don't have anyone around to help you. Your academic background or past successes/failures don't matter to me. Whether you are in top 10% or bottom 10%, don't hesitate to call me.
I am certainly older than you age wise, but there is hardly any difference in our mental age! So no need to hesitate! My past students have considered me as a father-figure. You may also consider the same! Will be delighted, if I could help you.
